Here we have a 1973 Ford Mustang Convertible with the optional 351ci 2bbl H-Code engine in it. The interior & engine of this example is all original & in working order. The vehicles first owner passed away in 1980 where it then sat in a shed for 5 years. In 1985 the father of the current owner purchased it & had all the needed work done at a local repair shop. All new OEM quarter panels were put in place, any rust was repaired using the bronzing method & it was repainted. In 2013 the car was passed down to the current owner, the son. The vehicle has been in the family for 38 years. Under current ownership it has not been driven all that much & only driven in the summer. Just 5320 miles / 8561 km have been put on it since July of 1992.
The 1973 was the final year for the "big" Mustang. It resembled the 1971-1972 but had some minor differences which were purely cosmetic. A large, square, chrome headlamp bezel appeared as well as a chrome trim around the tail lights. A urethane front bumper replaced the previous chrome bumper. The front sport lamps were now placed vertically in the front grille. A new, grained, black with bright trim was placed on the rear body panel between the tail lights. Due to the fuel crisis at the time buyer's preferences changed to smaller more fuel-efficient vehicles. This caused the migration to the Pinto-based Mustang that came in 1974. The 1973 Mustang convertible was the last Mustang convertible for many years.
This example is powered by the optional H-Code 351ci 2bbl V8 Cleveland engine over the standard 302. It spins the rear wheels through a 3-speed FMX automatic transmission. For this final year, suspension travel was increased by a quarter inch, the standard drum brakes were larger & convertibles were equipped with power front disc brakes.
It shows 62,500 miles / 100,585 km on the odometer, however still sold TMU (Total Mileage Unknown). The VIN confirms it has the optional 351ci 2bbl V8 Cleveland & also confirms it is a convertible; see the VIN photo in "EXTRA" gallery. For the 1973 model year the convertible was the 2nd least produced Mustang only behind the Fastback by just 1033 units. The convertible made up for just 8.79% of all Mustang trims; less than the Fastback Mach 1.
