Here we have a stunning W123 1984 Mercedes-Benz 230E Euro spec with a rare 5-speed manual transmission. The 230E is a range of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from November 1975 to January 1986. The W123 models surpassed their predecessor, the W114, as the most successful Mercedes. The designer of the W123 was the Italian engineer Bruno Sacco. Sacco defined the modern history of Mercedes-Benz, as he was responsible for the design of every Mercedes car, bus & truck for 25 years. Like its predecessors, the W123 gained the reputation of being well built & extremely reliable. They were very commonly chosen as taxi vehicles for this reason. It is perfectly normal for them to reach 500,000 or 1,000,000 km with only minor mechanical issues. Once the W123 reached the end of its service life, they were often shipped to 3rd world countries where they were highly regarded for their ability to travel on rough roads & not require frequent maintenance.
The W123 was around for 14 years, therefore naturally it underwent some updates every few years. These updates were called "series" internally & for the 3rd series / final update in 1982, the following changes were made: rectangular headlights, power steering as standard, Zebrano wood paneling in the dashboard, reduced wind noise due to improved roof trim strips & more. The 5-speed manual gearboxes were never offered by Mercedes-Benz for the North American market, which makes this example all the more desirable.
Featuring a 5-speed manual transmission, this is a true enthusiast’s car, offering both driving enjoyment & the luxury of a vintage Mercedes-Benz sedan. The stunning Orient Red exterior paint beautifully complements the light, airy Parchment cloth upholstery, while the Zebrano wood trim adds a touch of class to the interior. This car is perfect for someone looking for a combination of vintage luxury, great driving experience & collector appeal. Mechanically, this 230E is in reported great condition, a testament to its meticulous care by previous owners. The engine runs smoothly & the 5-speed manual transmission shifts precisely, providing an engaging driving experience.
This 230E was sold new in Europe before coming to Canada in August of 2000 when it had 188,211 miles / 302,896 km on the odometer. This 2nd owner drove the car for the next 22 years adding just under 12,427 miles / 20,000 km to the odometer before selling it to the current owner. Not too long after the acquisition, the current owner sold it to a friend with a classic car collection & then bought it back from the same friend during the summer of 2024 - he reportedly parked it with the collection & did not drive it. Since September of 2022 the odometer has increased by roughly 4,971 miles / 8,000 km.
It is powered by a fuel-injected M113 2.3L Inline-4 engine spinning the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The odometer now shows 205,016 miles / 329,942 km. Included is a binder that documents the vehicles history since day 1. This binder includes documents from the original European owner, transfer of ownership & import to Canada, services, owners manuals & more. With these documents we can see that in September of 1998 the car showed 157,010 miles / 252,684 km on the odometer, telling us that it has driven 48,006 miles / 77,258 km in 27 years. The vehicle was serviced in 2016 with a receipt amounting to $1560 cad.
The driver seat & upholstery flaws were reportedly quoted at $500 for the repair; the seller can have this arranged for the buyer with the appropriate upholstery shop. This 230E is a rare find, combining the elegance of a classic Mercedes-Benz with the rarity of a 5-speed manual transmission. With its well-documented history & beautiful color combination, it’s an ideal choice for collectors, driving enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates a classic Mercedes-Benz. Don’t miss your chance to own this classic luxury sedan!
